چکیده

The estimation of code delays along with amplitudes and phases of di erent users constitutes the rst stage in the demodulation process in a CDMA communication system. The delay estimation stage is termed the acquisition stage and forms the bottleneck for the detection of users' bitstreams; accurate detection necessitates accurate acquisition. Most existing schemes incorporate a single sensor at the receiver, which leads to an inherent limit in the acquisition based capacity, which is the number of users that can be simultaneously acquired. In this thesis we combine the bene ts of spatial processing in the form of an antenna array at the receiver along with code diversity to gain an increase in the capacity of the system. An additional parameter to be estimated now is the direction of arrival (DOA) of each user. We demonstrate the gains in parameter estimation with the incorporation of spatial diversity. We propose two classes of delay-DOA estimation algorithms | a maximum likelihood algorithm and a subspace based algorithm (MUSIC). With reasonable assumptions on the system we are able to derive computationally e cient estimation algorithms and demonstrate the gains achieved in exploiting multiple sensors at the receiver. In addition, we also investigate the bene ts of spatial diversity in linear multiuser detection. We consider two linear multiuser detectors, the decorrelating detector and the linear MMSE detector (chosen for their near-far properties) and characterize the performance increase in the multisensor case. We observe that in many cases, the gain can be directly captured in terms of the number of sensors in the array.

Arrayed MC-CDMA reception in space-time diffused multipath vector channels

Multi-Carrier Code Division Multiple Access (MC-CDMA) is a modulation scheme that combines the advantages of OFDM and CDMA to provide robustness against frequency selectivity in wireless channels. Arrayed MC-CDMA systems combine MC-CDMA and antenna array technology to harness the spatial and temporal ’signatures’ of received signals, thus making it possible to realize high transmission rates en...

Diffused Channel Estimation and Reception for Cyclic Prefix-free MC-CDMA Arrayed-MIMO Communication Systems

An arrayed-MIMO communication system, which employs antenna arrays at both ends of the wireless link, is proposed to leverage upon spatial information such as directions-of-arrival to achieve an improvement in performance. This is in contrast with conventional MIMO systems, which typically assume multiple independent antenna elements at the transmitters and receivers. This paper focuses on an a...

High-Performance Wireless via the Merger of CI Chip-Shaped DS-CDMA and Oscillating-Beam Smart Antenna Arrays

We introduce a novel merger of direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) and smart antenna arrays. With regard to the DS-CDMA scheme, we employ carrier interferometry DS-CDMA (CI/DS-CDMA), a novel implementation of DSCDMA where chips are decomposable into N narrowband frequency components. With regard to the antenna array, we deploy the oscillating-beam smart array. Here, applying...

CDMA cellular downlink transmission with transmit arrays and power control: circuit-switched and packet-switched systems

Wireless CDMA cellular downlink communications with transmit antenna arrays in multipath fading channels is studied. Transmit diversity and various beamforming techniques are investigated and compared, in conjunction with power control. No instantaneous downlink channel information is assumed; however, the obtained results are also compared with results assuming ideal feedback. The study is car...
